The Pacific Ocean is bigger than all the world’s land-masses put together. Crossing it in a small aircraft presents special problems, none more obvious than where one might refuel and can you get there? A vital refuelling stop (in the far east of French Polynesia) was made all the more complicated when they were told that to go there they must have a French-speaker on board. Strange but true. And so was their solution.

Easter Island maybe as far from any other inhabited land on Earth but this tiny, exotic island boasts one of the biggest airstrips! NASA paid to have Easter Island’s airport expanded to become the Space Shuttle’s ‘emergency-alternate’ in the South Pacific.

If you’re planning to come this way [and contrary to the advertising you may have seen on television] you may find that some major credit cards are not welcome when buying fuel for an aircraft. Even more surprising, several airports in South America even refused some US-cash! It turns out that there are forged, American, hundred-dollar bills out there and fuel-tanker drivers wouldn’t accept them.

Since the so-called, ‘war on terror’ the US has tightened up its borders: expect to be photographed and finger-printed on arrival. Europe is far more welcoming, on entry. We found the friendliest agents in Scotland but the EU offers only expensive fuel for private planes. The Av-gas in Egypt is far cheaper but they’ll make up for it with numerous airport fees and taxes.
